Scaling Back my Lifestyle: Clothes

In my work, appearance matters. I have spent thousands on clothes. Some highlights:
* a $750 briefcase
* a $500 purse AND a $400 purse (couldn't decide)
* a $2,500 suit

I use these things all the time. And when I see that briefcase, which is every day, I think: Lawd, that briefcase was expensive. That is followed by either "I'm so glad I can afford such nice things!" or "That's two car payments, FOOL!"

I am done beating myself up about my clothes. I need a couple more things for work, maybe $300 worth. I am going to lay out my outfits, plan to spend that $300, and then I am with Well-Heeled. I am NOT BUYING CLOTHES FOR SIX MONTHS. Gulp.

Even if I can't stick to this, I should be able to come awfully close.

Appearance matters, but at what point does cost no longer correlate with quality? Is a $2,500 suit really that much nicer than a $500 suit? I'd like to get something nicer than my $40 suit to wear on interviews, but I'm a college student on a limited budget. Any suggestions?

I'm sure you have enough clothes to tide you over for six months. I haven't bought new clothes for a couple years...once you pass the six month mark, you realize that quality pieces and treating the material right (dry cleaning items and not using a dryer - it ruins the fibers) will go a long way.

Good luck and we all know you can do it!

E.C. -- I can now tell cheap suit fabric (I wish I couldn't), but in science they might not be able to and might not care.

Here in Texas, to get a decent suit (good fabric) for cheap, I would go to Syms. They have suits that are about a year old. They usually have the stranger colors, but you can find a navy or a pinstripe mixed in.

Of course, I am no longer allowed to go to Syms.

My wife just got a suit from The Limited for around $250. I would be looking at $2500 and trying to see how many credit cards I could pay off. At the same time though I think your six month ban might be a little extreme. Most women like to change their appearance from week to week, so new/different clothes helps mix it up. I have discovered women evaluate each other more than men. Guys on the other hand can throw anything on and good to go. If it smells clean it probably is, right? My wife made me get some new shirts for work and some new pants. At times I feel guilty for spending money on myself, but I guess I need new clothes too since some of my stuff is wearing thin and seams are coming undone.
