On January 15, 2008, I swore I was not buying clothes for six months. I tweaked that a bit, and gave myself $200 "emergency" clothes money.
Well, it turns out that I am allergic to the gold-tone chain that one of my favorite pendants is on. So, I bought a delicate actual gold chain for $40. That's as close to a clothes emergency as you can get, I think.
But I did not buy anything else. I particularly did not buy these gorgeous D'Orsay pumps even though I really, really want them, they are only $80, and I have the perfect black suit with yellow top outfit for them. Nope. I will have to wear my 8 pairs of black shoes. Or maybe one of the 4 pairs of gold.
Gar! Has it only been two weeks on no-buy? I really need to be on no-buy! Thanks, Well-Heeled.

Wow, so you're averaging $20 a week on clothing and jewelry spending when you've committed to refrain from spending on those items. At that rate, you'll go through your "emergency" clothing money in ten weeks, not six months. Somehow, I don't think that quite counts as being on the wagon.
Rash from cheap jewelry = not fabulous.
No way I was going to endure a rash (and no suitable jewelry choice) for six months. I was open about it at least.
Our oldest daughter is around the same age as you and I wished she exercised the same attention to her finances as you.
Congrats.
That's awesome that you are going to give up buying new clothes for six months. Maybe I should think about doing that...
I agree with e.c. on this one. It doesn't sound like you are really on the wagon yet. If I were you, I would go to my closet and take stock of all the clothing. For example, how many black skirts do you have, how many pairs of shoes, etc. By seeing what you actually have, you can actually begin to see how many different outfits you can get from the clothes you do have. And I'm sorry, you do not "need" a gold chain or fancy shoes. Have you considered going to thrift stores or maybe trading clothes with friends who don't like their clothes anymore? I myself have not purchased more than $500 in new clothing in the last 5 years and I still often get compliments on the way I dress at work.
