Good googly moogly! What is going on with power!
I have a 1,400 sq. ft. townhouse with a shared wall. My power bill is from $80 (winter) to $160 (last month, May). June's power bill just came in.
$424
Four-freaking hundred dollars. First, I think there's a problem with the meters and the condo association. I'll have to deal with that. But even if it gets cut in half, that's still a ton! This is Texas, so I expect summer to be high, but that's crazy! What the heck happened?!
Good thing I don't live in a McMansion.

Ugh. I am thrilled to want a smaller house then.
McMansions are too much to take care of and clean as well as manage...
Do your utility companies offer budget billing, where you pay set rates that are adjusted a couple of times per year? (Usually ours is adjusted by less than $30.) I know some people don't like this because they want to see how much they are using, but it certainly takes the sting out of a very high bill.
A while back, in my last house, this happened. At first they said the meter was "mis-read" - I verified. Then they said I was experiencing power surges.
Have you seen the lights fade in and out? Not all the way out just dimming.
They then made me call an electrician and put in a new box. My costs went down as fast as they grew.
Call them right away - this is a fire hazzard if so.
I'm not saying it is, but that is way to large of a change.
I had that happen to me in my condo in St. Louis. Turns out what happened is that they were estimating the use, even though I wasn't on budget billing, and then when they bothered to come read the meter, things were much further off than they expected.
GOOD LORD that is expensive. And I was complaining about our $80 bill...
Jeez! I spent $15 last month on my electric bill....
I live in eastern MA.
My house is 2600 sq ft and my electric bill ending June 30, was $594. The worst is yey to come.
Good grief, Cheryl! It's time to reanalyze your electrical usage! Turn off lights, turn up the thermostat so the A/C runs less, etc....
I've got a 2100 sq ft two story in OH and my electric bill has never broken $100 in a month.
$400+? Yowza. My house is 2732 square feet, in San antonio, and I was astounded by my most recent $221 bill. It's the highest I've seen yet. Your house is half the size of mine, with double the bill??? Yep I'd want to call the utility and double check that reading ASAP.
And yup, the summers here are brutal, for sure.
Did you call the utility company?
Please let us know the outcome of this bill.
I feel your pain, REALLY. My bill was $700. There are several things to consider, or check: Check the AC compressor. It's an electric motor and the older they get the more power they suck to do the same amount of work. My bill dropped a couple of hundred with the new compressor. Have them REALLY read the meter. The standard practice is to estimate from the office, NOT physically walk the streets. Lastly, it's the economy. When the Government prints more $ to pay for it's addictions, the total supply in circulation (M3 on the Fed's reports)includes what's in your pocket at the time. The value of each $ is reduced to show it's NEW fractional amount of the total. Unfortunately, this means your money is worth less and takes more $ to buy the same stuff you bought yesterday for less.
