Costs of the Dog, or The Vet's Car Payment

Poor Dog, that is my actual four-legged dog, got sick and had to go to the vet. The damage was $300--that place is worse than Target.

That said, I have come a long way. When I started this blog, I had spent 5K on my dog in her six months with me. Lately, I have really scaled this down.

Since the beginning of the year, I have spent like this on Dog:
$25/month on anti-flea, heartworm, anti-mosquito (critical)
$40/month on food. I scaled her down to wet food once a week.
$75/month on daycare. She usually goes one half-day a week ($15), sometimes twice, to keep her from destroying my house.

$140/month for the dog, not bad. Well, then the $300 vet bill. So Dog and I are doing much better.

Have you consulted with your vet about the way you're feeding your dog? It may not be sufficient for his/her health.

p.s. Having spent $166 last week at a vet appointment for one of our cats I understand your pain. Now if only there was a way to add these furry children to our health insurance policies as dependents.

I am a fanatic about her food. I have to drive over an hour to get it at a special store. After all the dog food problems in the past, I buy a US-made, US-sourced food that discloses all its ingredients.

My vet tried to push that toxic Science Diet nonsense on me, and I'm thinking about changing vets because of that.

I was just questioning the wisdom of once a week wet food. Although I'm sure diets for dogs are completely different than for felines.

Barb get some pet health insurance. VPI. http://www.petinsurance.com/affiliates/SearchIntelligence10.aspx?ec=CI0240
Mine won't be covered since they are adopted and old, but many people do it.

I spent $500 last month on one dog for some stupid surgery of growth removal. And they convinced me to test the growths for cancer. Though if it had been cancerous I would probably have let him die because at his age chemo would have been horrible.

Plus worse yet I could have tested the growths myself but my DH said don't be cheap. Pets are expensive.

But he's worth it, eh?

My kitten had a terrible food allergy that took many visits to the vet, overnight stays and exploratory procedures to the tune of $2000. And she was less than 2 years old! Big time OUCH. But . . . now that it has been diagnosed and she is on a vet diet she is the best thing I have ever encountered. Happy sassy and healthy. A real joy to me. I wouldn't change a thing.

I appreciate your honesty about the cost of your dog. I was thinking about getting a dog, but I definitely can't afford it while being in school.

Please keep posting about pet ownership costs! :)
