Going to Dave Ramsey

I have a family member who is a Dave Ramsey nut. I try not to talk about personal finance in my real life, so I never had a deep conversation about it, but he's far gone. He uses the quotes (you know, "beans and rice" "sell everything but the dog" and so on). He constantly talks about how great Dave Ramsey is.

We bought him (and us) tickets to Dave Ramsey in Houston in January for Christmas. I have some mixed feelings about this.

I think most of what Dave Ramsey says is dead on for most people. That said, I don't think any personal finance is one-size-fits-all, but that's how Dave Ramsey operates. In his world, there's no student loans, no credit cards, no business loans.

I'm not giving up my Amex just because some collector harassed the Ramseys in the 80s. Sorry. I also feel no shame about my school loans. (The car loans were not my proudest moment, but they were done in six months.)

That said, I think Dave Ramsey is dynamite on radio. A little awkward on TV, but dynamite on radio. I expect a great show, if nothing else.

We went to see Dave in Grand Rapids, MI a few years ago and it changed our lives. Have a great time.

I want to take my children 14 and 17 to see Dave when he is in our area. Although I don't agree with everything I think it would be a positive expereince for my boys and for my husband and myself.

I look forward to hearing your opinions.

I'd like to hear him on the radio once, and he sounds like an interesting person in terms of a show...

But I do agree that some of the things that he says tends to be really one note... everyone is different.

He's definitely not for everyone but I think it would be a great show, especially in this day and age. Can't wait for your report! You should also call him sometime and do that "I'm debt free!" scream.

Dave Ramsey rubs me the wrong way. While he probably IS the solution for mainstream America, I don't think anyone with a net worth of several million dollars has ever followed his advice. Same with billionaires.

He basically gives you a strategy to make everything work out despite a low salary. If you want to take it to the next level, he lets you down.
