I usually don't like to laugh at entrepreneurial dreams because I know how tough it is, and what you need more than anything is hope. But this one, whew!
I'll call my youngest brother Lazy. Lazy has mooched off my parents through the years, moving back with them when his girlfriend's parents kick him out or he gets kicked out of an abandoned warehouse. I'm sure my parents have given Lazy money.
Lazy called me yesterday with a great idea. He wants to open a gun shop. HA! (Just so we don't sound like a Texas caricature, my parents are very anti-gun. I've never even handled a real gun.)
Lazy's logic: All his friends are buying guns because of Obama, so he should sell guns. He just needs a license, right?!
I tried to explain to him the concept of insurance. That's the kind of business you have to have insurance to operate. I told him just to price it out. Just find an insurance guy, tell him what you want to do, and price it. I was trying to be gentle. Pricing out the insurance will require work, so he won't do it. If he does do it, it will blow his mind. But I'm still laughing at my laziest family member operating the most highly regulated shop possible.

it's a damned shame our country has deteriated to the point we need a license to operate any kind of a honorable business.
Well if he doesn't do the research into a license, could he still open a shop illegally and pretend he didn't know? :P
Have to think of all the possibilities, especially since he's Lazy..
Are you sure we aren't talking about my brother here? He's really into guns too.
Thanks for doing what you can to throw some cold water on your brother's plan. Unlike Anonymous, I think it's a damn shame our country has deteriorated to the point that any idiot with a few bucks to invest can set up an arsenal next door to your home--with or without a license.
You can sell hobby/collectible guns right out of the back of your car, without a license. Tell your bro to hurry up because there is upcoming laws on the books that will put an end to that also. Once Obama passes laws pricing bullets the prices of a 3 bedroom house, thereby making it impossible to operate a gun, your bro will be out of luck!
a gun shop?! definitely sounds like the thoughts of a younger brother. haha
What is wrong with guns? It's about the second amendment that the sale of them has gone up. Look at where the crime rates are at, places where guns are BANNED! Texas is save because many people have a gun on them, crime rates stay low because the criminals don't want to get shot breaking the law. If you brother wants to open a gun shop, he has to take the steps to do it.
Ammunition is going to skyrocket in price, the point being that no one will be able to afford the bullets that go into the dang gun in the first place. You are correct in thinking that your brother has picked possibly the worst business to go into.
Hm...would the same regulations apply to selling just ammunition (i.e. no guns)? Because that sounds like the only thing he (or anyone) would have to sell at some moment in the future to make some $$ stockpiling.
The finer points of owning or not owning a gun aside, I think it could be a good thing that your brother is showing some entrepreneurial interests. This may not be the best opportunity for him per se, but maybe he's reached a point where he's decided he needs to turn his life around. He may not know the best way to do it, but maybe he's trying. I think it's good you tried to offer him some direction.
I could be wrong, of course. He could be one of those guys who has a new scheme every month. In either case, it's good that you handled it the way you did, offering a suggestion to get him started (or scare him away from the idea) as opposed to laughing at him.
Sorry for the massive generalisation here, but you Americans and your guns make me laugh. Especially the attitude of Jim. Craziness.
I don't really have any feelings on guns one way or another -- except that if you are running a gun shop (or a day care or a pool) you need insurance!!!
It doesn't really matter. Lazy will never actually do it. Too much work.
Can you please explain to me what you meant when you wrote "all of his friends are buying guns because of Obama?" Is this a reference to his new policies or his race?
FruGal so you don't mind big brother constantly watching you at any given moment anywhere on the street? CCTV freaks me out more than people like me having guns. Ban Michael Savage, keep your socialism, I still like freedom.
Jim, your entire assumption that crime rates are low in areas that hive tighter gun control is absolute rubbish. Maybe in the gun crazy-US, but not in the rest of the world! Look at the almost non-existent gun crime in the UK. Even the regular police don't carry guns here. The sooner tighter gun controls are brought in in the US, the better.
Hey frugal,
Didn't we leave your country so that we didn't have to hear you people whine anymore. An armed communtiy is a safe community.
Any American who thinks guns are evil is an idiot who takes freedom for granted. Read some history, the founders of this nation wanted Americans to own guns to insure freedom from tyrannical governments.
Thieves and murderers are unlawful by definition. Gun laws are only for the law abiding citizen, which defeats their entire purpose. "Shall not be infringed" does not need a lawyer or judge to be interpreted!
