Joined the Gym

I went to the 24 Hour Fitness closest to me. There are multiple levels of 24 Hour Fitness, and this (Super Sport) is the fanciest. Most facilities, most classes, chic urban location, beautiful urban view.

It had almost as many classes as the Fancy Pants gym. No Israeli kickboxing or whatever, but it had a whole lot, including all the pilates and yoga I can handle.

It costs $50/month with a $50 initiation fee. The manager told me to go ahead and go to this morning's pilates class. I loved the instructor so much, I signed up afterward. He kicked my butt while being super nice, and he was funny! I didn't even notice it was 45 minutes later, he was so funny. Who could ask for more? The manager gave me a week free, the standard trial. So I can go cancel before then, if I want.

That gym is the nicest I've ever been to. I didn't even see it all. It was multiple stories with a pool and a basketball court and racquetball, and I'm sure there was even more. The little gym at my former work washed your gym clothes and put them in your cubby, but that's about all it was missing.

I'm so excited about 24 Hour Fitness. After I got laid off, I really needed a place to go that didn't involve shopping or a $4 coffee or a $3 beer. Exercise is really good for me, and I was never going to do DVDs at home.

At $50 initiation, plus $50 a month, I think it's a bargain! It's not as good as the Costco deal, but $50 a month for all the classes I can handle is great. It's so great to be in such a beautiful space with lovely women (they go for coffee after!) and doing something good for me.

I feel good today. I blew my hair out, put on my makeup, and I finally felt alive again.

I'd go if something like that was remotely available where I live

$50/month!? SO CHEAP.

I have a really difficult time exercising when I don't go to the gym - Chad and I quit for a while and then rejoined.

I know that some of the comments have been saying that a gym isn't a necessary expense, but from my experience, having to actually go somewhere makes me more likely to work out. I have yoga DVDs, and usually I'll put it off (because I can do them whenever, right?) and wind up never watching it.

The sign up fee is the best part - a lot of gyms charge hundreds of dollars for sign up fees! Plus 24 Hrs are soooo nice. We have a community center by us that is $13/month....but it definitely does NOT compare to 24 HR and it doesn't even include classes!

Cool that the 24 Hour Fitness over there is so nice. I belonged to one as well (and my membership let me go to all levels) and was never truly satisfied as the people and the facilities were never as nice as Equinox. So I quit that and went back to Equinox. Only to not use my gym membership...Lol. But your posts about the gym have made me start going again!

I've heard that 24 hour fitness facilities are really nice!

I think $50/month is totally worth it! Now you should just try to drag your friends to classes with you :)

You know what's cheaper than $50/month? Exercising at home. Running is free after you buy the shoes. Walking, hiking, www.crossfit.com, tons of stuff.

gah - I hate Anonymous who recommended working out at home... I just can't do it myself and you said in your blog entry you couldn't either. Add some value in your comments, anons! That being said, I joined Lifetime Fitness (I'm in Austin, there's one near my work - the other is by my house!) and it is the Taj Mahal of fitness centers. Marble & cleanliness everywhere! Maybe they're in your area too...but I did join with a work-life coupon from my job so I didn't have the enrollment fee to pay and the job pays 1/3, so it's close to $50 a month. Big cost savings there -which I never would have done had the work benefit.

But I feel much the same as you - it's a home away from home that I use for stress relief, relaxation, recreation and I don't have to spend money on - and as an added bonus, they have childcare, so I can bring the 2 year old without having to worry that her dad will let her into the Sharpie markers again!
