Lottery Tickets

As a sin tax and general contributor to the state budget, I like the lottery. Here in Texas, most of us are pretty far from casinos, and really far from any nice ones. We have the lottery (and illegal online gambling) instead.

I wouldn't consider myself much of a gambler. Heck, we went to Vegas for a whole week and came back down $40. But we had fun, and I don't see anything wrong with a little gambling now and then with consenting adults.

Here in the Valley, I found myself in the trappings of the poor, the lottery. I know that the lottery is wasted money. Really, I'm not sure why I did it. Everyone else was doing it, and I'm sticking to that story.

The local grocery store has this slick, shiny lottery machine, like an ATM or a video slot machine or something. It even has multiple language options. I'd never seen one of those before. I spent probably $20 on lottery tickets and scratch-offs this week. To fit in. What difference did a couple $1 scratch-offs from the shiny machine make?

Around here, people buy those $10 scratch-offs, even $50 scratch-offs! I could say that's stupid. But is that really more stupid than a flight to Vegas or an expensive dinner or all the other crap I wasted my money on?

Yes, it's far more stupid.
There is no fun, no benefit to you.
You are smarter than that.
