I sometimes can't believe that you would have to pay that much for health care. I live in a state with mandatory health insurance and I pay about $300 with no deductible and reasonable co-pays. A plan with all the bells and whistles is $400. That was the most expensive on the list, and we have some of the best health care in the country.

Oh, and you're not allowed to screen for preexisting conditions either. I kind of think that should be illegal since almost everyone has some little thing that could be considered pre-existing.

I had a baby 4 years ago. I had no complications what so ever, including morning sickness, nothing. The cost to deliver the child was $13k. I also live in a southern state. That does not include any of the doctor's time, pre-natal visits, sonagrams, etc. Babies are quite expenses, without insurance-that is.

I had my one, which is more then I ever wanted, and am so done it's not even funny. But I still get a twinge of wanting a baby every now and again.

I think biology sneaks out to override freewill sometimes.

Is it possible your brother is suffering from severe mental illness? I ask because standing in a fountain with delusions of grandeur along with mania-like behavior is a really big sign. I had an aunt who I loved dearly but have only recently had a good relationship; She had a severe mental illness and was self-medicating with meth. I'm lucky to have her clean and sober, but it didn't happen until later in life. Hopefully he'll get the help he really needs, and if he's in prison again for the long haul, maybe you can get him in with a psych consult.

Also, for your parents safety, they can get a restraining order, and if he gets crazy again, on drugs or not, I know in CA there's a 5150 hold, a 72 hour psychiatric hold for someone who is a danger to himself or others. Might be available in TX as well.

I was seriously peeved about the lack of maternity coverage when I was looking at insurance as well. I figured out it came down to two things:
1) I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law and am sure the minute I don't have maternity coverage I'll get pregnant.
2) It felt a little sexist. It covers everything that can happen to my husband's sex organs...why not mine?

I'd still rather be with affordable health care than without, but I wish "full" coverage didn't cost an arm, leg, and firstborn.

Why do you say a baby is out? It is about 7K for delivery. Add up visits, say 6, at 120 each and you are looking at another 720. You would spend that with just your COBRA. So it isn't out unless you want it to be.

I think it's a good choice - that COBRA rate is crazy. Ours was $900 (though it was crappy ins.). Wat's insane, though, is that you're paying $2400 a year for, well, nothing, unless something catastrophic happens (which is not likely). Health insurance companies are making money hand-over-fist. Health insurance should not be run by for-profit companies, just like educational institutions are generally not for profit - neither should entities that govern how we get medical treatment.

Don't be surprised if they increase your rate for asthma.
